Shade Vines
One good use of vines is to provide shade from the sunlight. A vine could be trained to grow around an arbor or trellis and create a wonderful, natural looking canopy for shade. There are many types of shade vines, and they have different characteristics.
Dutchman’s Pipe is one of the common shade vines. It is best used when trained to grow up an arbor or trellis and can also cover walls. This vine has large, heart shaped leaves that are perfect for a screen from sunlight. This shade vine works best in full sun to partial shade, and does not require much water.

Shade vines are also used to block sunlight from plants that only require partial sun. These shade vines are grown up a trellis or low fence and block the sun from an area of the garden only part of the day.

Many people prefer the natural look of shade vines when covering a porch or patio. A porch covered in vines is much more rustic than a porch covered using a canopy or large umbrella.
